Description: Special education teams are often unsure about the process of evaluating for and implementing Alternative/Augmentative Communication (AAC) with their students who are non- speaking or minimally verbal. They often find it difficult to align curriculum and IEP goals with CCSS for these students. This session will provide special education professionals with foundational knowledge surrounding AAC, the AAC evaluation process (including funding), and research to dispel pervasive myths surrounding AAC. Attendees will reflect on and examine assumptions and beliefs that may be barriers for students with high support needs. This information will equip special education professionals with the knowledge to make evidence-based decisions and immediately apply best practices for students. They will leave the session ready to ensure students have the proper tools to develop language and literacy skills, demonstrate their knowledge, and access their curriculum. Special education professionals will be equipped to cultivate a community of inclusion, equity, expectation, and acceptance for students who use AAC.
Objectives: By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Describe myths related to AAC and relevant research to debunk them.
- Identify resources for aligning IEPs with CCSS and supporting literacy development.
- Describe how to align IEP goals with the Maine Core Content Connectors or CCSS.
- Define descriptive teaching and describe examples of its application in a given activity and its alignment to the CCSS.
- Reflect on the impact of assumptions and beliefs on AAC system decision making and implementation as well as identify ways to create a supportive school climate for students who use AAC.
