When Safety and FAPE Intersect: Legal Options and Decision Making in Complex Student Cases
A virtual workshop series | 3 sessions, 2 hours each
This 3-part webinar series will begin with a session dedicated to a high-level overview of the foundational considerations that guide legally compliant decision-making and removal of students with disabilities who threaten the safety of the school environment. The second session will move to the next level and provide a deeper dive into the heart of these considerations with an exploration of the process for making defensible manifestation determinations when addressing unsafe behaviors on the part of students identified under IDEA and Section 504. The final session will dive further into the topic of addressing unsafe behaviors with a specific focus on ensuring a full understanding of the law's exceptions to the general rules of discipline when addressing certain "special circumstances" set forth under federal law for incidents involving weapons, drugs, or serious bodily injury.

Registration and Cancellation policy: Must be registered to attend. In the event a registered conference participant cannot attend the workshop series, another person in that district may attend in their place. There are no other changes, financial credits, or substitutions. The MADSEC office must be informed and provided with the applicable information via email at least 24 hours prior to the start of the event.
