Supporting & Serving Students with Brain Injury in Schools

​This presentation aims to prepare classroom teachers and administrators to utilize evidence-based practices with children with brain injury to maximize their participation and success in school.

A brief overview of childhood brain injury will be provided, followed by case-based learning opportunities related to mild and moderate-severe brain injury.

​Special populations of children with brain injury will also be discussed.

Attendees will be prepared to best serve and support children with brain injury with a variety of strategies and tools.

​Expert Speakers

Jessica S. Riccardi, PhD CCC-SLP, is an Assistant Professor in Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Maine.
​As a speech-language pathologist, Dr. Riccardi researches how best to support children with brain injury in academic, social, and vocational settings. She is passionate about training undergraduate and graduate students to serve children with brain injury using evidence-based practices.

Katy Bizier, MPH, MEd, is the Senior NeuroResource Facilitator for the Brain Injury Association of America – Maine Chapter, where she supports survivor, caregivers and professionals in navigating the complex system of care after brain injury and stroke.  As a former educator and a public   health professional, Katy is invested in identifying ways to better support our young survivors throughout their educational careers and future endeavors.
