Sara Gilfenbaum
Regular Educator
of the Year Award 2007



The Maine Administrators of Services for Children with Disabilities (MADSEC) recognized Sara Gilfenbaum as the Regular Education Teacher of the year. MADSEC is the association of Special Education Administrators in Maine’s local public schools, private special education schools, and Child Development Services (preschool) sites.

Chris Tofani, Special Education Administrator of M.S.A.D. #50 introduced Sara and presented her with the award at the MADSEC Awards Dinner held at the Atlantic Oakes By-The-Sea in Bar Harbor, June 25.

Sarah Gilfenbaum has taught in M.S.A.D. #50, Thomaston, St. George, and Cushing, since 1994. Sara earned her undergraduate degree in history from the University of Massachusetts. She earned her Masters Degree in Education at the University of Maine at Orono.

In M.S.A.D. #50, Sara has taught in a variety of settings. Sara has taught kindergarten and grade 2, but most recently, grade 6 at the Thomaston Grammar School. She collaborates extensively with students, parents, and professional colleagues to develop and implement instructional interventions that are responsive to the individual learning needs of her students, both in and out of school. In addition, Sara serves as team leader at Thomaston Grammar School through her participation in the Leadership Team and her involvement in various district-wide committees. Sara has been a presenter at the Maine Association of Middle Level Educators conference, and has been a driving force in the district-wide effort to utilize student data to inform instructional practices.

Sara resides in Waldoboro.
