The Maine Administrators of Services for Children with Disabilities (MADSEC) recognized Julia Hegan as the Special Education Teacher of the year. MADSEC is the association of Special Education Administrators in Maine’s local public schools, private special education schools, and Child Development Services (preschool) sites.
Chris Tofani, Special Education Administrator of M.S.A.D. #50 presented the award at the MADSEC Awards Dinner held at the Atlantic Oakes By-The-Sea in Bar Harbor, June 25.
Julia Hegan has been employed as a special education teacher by M.S.A.D. #50, Thomaston, St. George, and Cushing, since 1998. Julia earned her undergraduate degree in Special Education from Wheelock College in 1981. She earned her Masters Degree in Education of the Deaf from Smith College in 1986. Prior to her employment in M.S.A.D. #50, Julia taught children with special needs in California for several years.
In M.S.A.D. #50, Julia has worked with children with disabilities in a variety of settings, but most recently in the 5/6 Resource Room at the Thomaston Grammar School. She collaborates extensively with student, parents, and professional colleagues to develop and implement instructional interventions that are responsive to the individual learning needs of her students, both in and out of school.
Julia resides in Rockport with her husband, Jim and two cherished Jack Russell Terriers.
